Inspired by the Winter Olympics - More Than Just Sport
A Moment the World Shares
As the Winter Olympics comes to an end I’ve had a chance to reflect on the event. Throughout, I’ve found myself glued to the TV and scrolling through social media, taking in all forms of Winter Olympics content. Every time events like this come around, it feels as though the world collectively agrees to pause and tune into something shared. No matter where you are or what you normally follow, the Olympics create a moment of global connection that’s hard to ignore.
From Casual Viewer to “Expert”
Whether you’re drawn in by the competition, the sense of community, or the rivalries, there’s something for everyone to latch onto. Even the most unfamiliar sports suddenly feel accessible. I can’t count how many memes I’ve seen of people jokingly declaring themselves experts in sports they only just discovered through Olympic coverage. Or how viewers, like myself, now have formed extremely strong opinions on Madison Chock’s skirt length because of Netflix’s Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing. Add in the beauty and pageantry of the opening ceremonies and the red carpet moments that follow, and the Olympics become more than an athletic event. They’re a cultural experience, reaching audiences far beyond traditional sports fans.
A Personal Connection to the Dream
These moments resonate with me on a deeper level as I continue working toward my own athletic dreams. I’m currently living in Spain, playing water polo professionally, with the ultimate goal of competing in the LA 28 Summer Olympics. Watching athletes perform on the world stage is both inspiring and grounding because it’s a reminder of what’s possible when dedication meets opportunity.
The Part You Don’t See
What the coverage often makes easy to forget is that while the Olympics feel like the most important event in the world, they’re only one moment in a much larger journey. I know that there are many competitions, seasons, and moments that don’t receive the same spotlight that matter deeply to those competing. While much of the world was waiting for the Olympics to begin, I was watching teammates and friends compete in the European Water Polo Championships. A tournament with monumental importance to a European player’s preparation for the upcoming summer Olympics. It’s an event that requires the same intensity, preparation, and commitment, even without the global spotlight.
And beyond competitions themselves, I think of the long days of practice, the early mornings, the repetition, all of the behind-the-scenes work that never makes it to broadcast but are essential to every performance we see.
Carrying the Momentum Forward
Still, as we watched athletes chase and achieve their dreams, it’s nearly impossible not to feel your own surge of motivation. Whether that inspiration shows up in sport, career goals, or creative pursuits, there’s something powerful about witnessing commitment at that level. For me, as an athlete, but also simply as a fan, I’m grateful. Grateful for the stories and the shared moments that have the power to captivate the world.
And if there’s one thing the Olympics remind us, it’s that the moments we share matter. The journeys in progress, not just the finish lines. If you want to stay connected to more of those moments, follow Betty Center on social media and be part of what we’re building every day.
